A Short Introduction
I’m a philosophy professor, author, and speaker. Most of my teaching, writing, and speaking is focused on questions related to character and human flourishing. I also write about controversial stuff like gun violence, conspiracy theories, and Christian nationalism.
For many years now my focus has been on how spiritual formation is connected to cultivating Christian character. This led to my most recent book, Humility: Rediscovering the Way of Love and Life in Jesus Christ (Eerdmans, 2024).
I’ve published several books, all available on Amazon and elsewhere.
If the Short Introduction Wasn’t Enough…
My Family
My wife Dawn and I have been married for 31 years. We have 3 daughters and 1 dog. We’re also involved in a local church.
My Work
I am a Professor of Philosophy at Eastern Kentucky University. I teach, write, and speak about topics in ethics, family, sports, religion and spirituality, and technology, but always with an eye towards character and human flourishing. I’ve published 15 books. Some are works intended for scholars, but most are for people with an interest in how careful reflection can be applied to everyday life.
My Free Time
In my free time, I enjoy hanging out with my family, reading, bicycling, running, and soccer. I am a retired high school soccer coach and am passionate about the beautiful game. I enjoy sports, and support The Arsenal. I grew up in Kansas City, so I’m a longtime fan of the Super Bowl Champions, the Kansas City Chiefs, as well as Sporting Kansas City, and the Royals. From my time in Colorado, I’m also a fan of the Colorado Avalanche. So I guess I like sports a lot, which has led to my involvement with the Faith and Sport Institute.
